What is Toning and Glazing?
Toning and glazing are semi permanent colors that are used to add TONE (color) to your hair. You know when you leave the salon and your hair is sooo shiny? That’s the toner!! Or when you have washed it a few times and then you look in the mirror and it looks dingy or fades to an unwanted tone? Well that’s when the glaze or toner is gone. The hue of your hair could be golden (AKA yellow for bright blondes) or even a muddy color. Stylist’s can formulate the glaze to counteract those unwanted tones. A lot of the time this is done at the bowl or chair in the salon after your lightener has been rinsed out.
So toning and glazing are the same thing! I tone a lot of my blondes with Oligo gloss in shade 10-12 + 10-6 or just 10-12 (it’s my favorite) after lifting them to a level 10. I feel like it gives the perfect cool toned icy blonde without looking purple. Now there’s a ton of shades and if you want the purple icy look you can definitely get it.
Another tip when I tone, I pull out the hairline. Leaving the hairline for last since it is most porous (usually) and sometimes I even leave it out completely. This creates a natural, just left the beach, look.
FAQs
- What helps toner not fade so fast? Using the right shampoo, conditioner, and haircare products definitely helps! I recommend R+Co Shampoo and R+Co Conditioner.
- Do I always need a toner? Absolutely not, it is a preference for sure! You could love the raw lift that your stylist achieved with lightener only. If there are any unwanted tones or an extra boost though, a toner is needed.
- How long does toner last? This all depends on the porosity of your hair. If your hair is more dry or damaged the toner will grab darker and faster but fade faster. If your hair is healthier it could last longer. Typically a toner lasts anywhere from 8-14 shampoos. This is why it is important to not wash your hair every day ;).
- Can you come in and just get a toner? Yes, absolutely a lot of the times I actually recommend my blondes coming in half way in-between color appointments to maintain the look they want. You can book that here.
