Purple shampoo! Do you use it? Do you need it? So many questions and I see over and over again clients that are using it wrong or not even knowing it’s a thing. I’m here to clear the confusion.

- What does it do? — Purple shampoo is similar to a VERY semi toner or gloss. This means it only adds tone to your hair. It’s going to cancel out unwanted yellow or golden tones that you have in your hair.
- What’s the best purple shampoo? — I love Oligo Blacklight Purple and Blue shampoo. Most purple shampoo is drying, Oligo’s is infused with 11 amino acids and argon oil, which actually strengthens your hair as well as adds shine.
- How often should I use purple shampoo? — As needed. I know this answer isn’t very specific. It really depends on your hair. If you have super porous hair AKA dry and brittle your hair will soak up the shampoo fast causing it to maybe even have a purple hue, but it will fade very fast so you may have to use it more often, leaving it on less. I would start out with every third time you shampoo your hair and see how that goes. Remember purple/blue shampoo is a temporary fix think of it as an opaque overlay masking the yellow/gold unwanted tones. It is not going to PULL out any of those, again just mask it. I would also use purple shampoo once your gloss or toner has faded off of your blonde from the salon. In most cases 10-15 washes.
- What is the difference between purple and blue shampoo? — Purple shampoo is for levels 8-10 and blue is for levels 7-8. Although you can definitely use either you are just going to get different results. Think of a color wheel. Red, Blue, and Yellow… whichever unwanted tone your hair has (yellow/gold) go straight across from it and that is the color shampoo you are going to use. Gold = blue. Yellow = purple. Golden balayages, golden highlights, or warmer highlights wanting to balance out the brass and achieve a natural blonde may want to use the blue. While lighter blondes, yellow blondes, or faded blondes may want to use the purple to achieve a more white, bright, natural blonde.
- How long do I leave purple or blue shampoo on? — I would start with 2-5 minutes. Shave your legs in the meantime and grab a hand mirror so you can make sure you aren’t turning your hair more than you’d like.

Tips
Go outside and look at your hair in a mirror in the natural lighting. The bulbs in your bathroom are more than likely yellow reflecting off of your hair. You may see yellow so then use more purple shampoo, in return creating an almost grey/purple shade in your hair that you don’t see until you look at yourself in a picture.
If you are scared put the shampoo in and put your fingers together squeezing off the excess to look at your hair and see what it looks like. You will be able to tell in the shower. Also another tip, your ends and around your hair line are the most porous of your hair, leave those out in the beginning and apply the shampoo everywhere else first. Wait 1-2 minutes and then finish applying all over.
